The process of galvanizing metal is important to ensure longevity and added durability of any wrought iron products which are outdoors, such as gates and railings. It involves applying a layer of zinc in order to protect the metal work underneath to prevent rusting and the most common method is to submerge the gate or metal work into molten zinc. Galvanizing protects in two ways. The protective layer stops any corrosive liquids or substances getting through to the inner metal, as well as being the first point of contact for any scratches.

Eventually corrosion will occur, especially if you live in marine areas with salty air. This is because of the high electric conductivity of salt particles, making the environment acidic. This can be put off for a while longer with further preventative measures such as special paint coatings and extra layers of sealant and such. In more neutral environments outdoor metalwork can last a hundred years.
