Pickets: The vertical pieces of a gate which are aligned upright.
Rail: The horizontal pieces along a gate.
Finial: The decorative pieces at the top of a gate.
Post: The thick piece of metal at either end to give structure and form. These are more commonly found with panel gates.
Post Cap: The decorative piece at the top of the post.
Bracket: A piece of material which is secured over the rail and to the post with screws.
U Frame: A selection of thick metal pieces which go on either side of the gate and across the bottom. These are usually found with wrought iron gates. It is the backbone of a gate and creates a U shape..

Alloy: A substance with metallic property that is made from two or more chemical elements. For example, steel is an alloy of iron.
Annealing: The process of softening steel. This involves a heating and cooling process.
Bloom: A piece of steel which is unfinished.
Casting: This is when molten metal is poured into a mould.
